Importing Horizon Templates

On the web app, SwiftReporter can import a Horizon inspection template from two JSON files: the base library (horizon.json) and your company export. You enter one Template Name. Import can create one or two SwiftReporter templates, plus reusable comments from Horizon recommendation phrases.

Created template titles are {Template Name} Residential and/or {Template Name} Commercial, depending on what is in your Horizon export.

Import Horizon Template is web-only. It is not available on the mobile app. It is hidden when the template you are working with is set to Marine Survey.

What gets imported

The Import Horizon Template screen states:

The import creates Residential and/or Commercial templates from the files. Categories, Description/Limitation questions, and named Recommendation groups as subcategories. Rec chips become comments (title plus implication as the recommendation). Company extras nest onto the matching questions and comments. Booking, invoices, emails, and logos are skipped.

How imported templates are organized:

  • Horizon Named Groups become categories. Named Rec groups become real subcategories (for example Sloped roofing or Roof Drainage). A Recommendations / General group becomes a General subcategory. Import does not create a single empty Observations subcategory. If a category has questions but no Rec groups with comments, one General subcategory is added so findings can still be added.
  • The company’s visible-category list is optional extras, not an exclusive allowlist. Always-on residential sections (Electrical, Heating, Cooling, Plumbing, Insulation, and similar) always import. Optional or commercial categories import only when the company has them enabled. Disabled categories stay out.
  • Category Description and Limitation content become category info text plus questions (dropdowns and checkboxes). Info text supports basic HTML only.
  • Each Rec dropdown or company-extra condition becomes one reusable defect comment on the matching subcategory. The title is component — condition, except General / General notes / Private notes, which use the condition alone. Description stays empty unless the chip text is long. Recommendation is the resolved implication, not a copy of the title. Longer phrases may become note comments.
  • Horizon dropdowns become questions. Company-authored dropdowns nest as answers under the matching category or subcategory.
  • House-report add-ons that were optional in Horizon (Appliances, Pool, WDO, Alarm, and similar) appear on the Residential template as optional sections. They are included by default. You can uncheck them for a specific job under Optional sections.
  • Horizon commercial sections become their own Commercial template. Those sections are required on that template. They are not leftover optional sections on the house report. Import creates 0–2 templates: Residential if non-commercial categories survive, and Commercial if names start with “com” or look like Uniformat commercial modules. Titles are {Template Name} Residential and/or {Template Name} Commercial.
  • Wind Mitigation is not imported. Import does not recreate TREC or Wind Mitigation — those stay SwiftReporter Pre-built templates.
  • Import does not create a TREC template. Use the TREC REI 7-6 prebuilt already in SwiftReporter.
  • Category names keep readable casing.
  • Each created template keeps only its own comments.

If you belong to an organization, the imported templates and comments are shared with your organization.

What is not imported

Booking, invoices, emails, logos, contracts, seats, Research Center paragraphs, illustrations, Action List items, leftover autocomplete job phrases, one-off inspection findings that are not reusable library comments, and Wind Mitigation.

Before you begin

  • A signed-in SwiftReporter account on the web app
  • Both Horizon JSON files: horizon.json (base library) and the company export
  • Each file 40MB or smaller
  • A residential-oriented template workflow (Horizon import is hidden for Marine Survey)

Either file alone is rejected. Import Template stays disabled until you enter a Template Name and select both files.

Steps

  1. Open Templates on the web app.
  2. Click Import in the library header (separate from Create New).
  3. Select the Import Horizon Template card.
  4. Enter a Template Name.
  5. Use the file picker labeled Horizon JSON files (horizon.json + company export) and select both JSON files.
  6. Click Import Template.

Import Template stays disabled until you enter a Template Name and select both files.

A create-template link can open Import Horizon Template directly from this same import flow.

During import

The screen shows import progress. During upload, a percentage can appear. After upload, the message is:

Converting and writing can take up to about 10 minutes. Keep this page open.

Progress stays up until the full template and comment library are written. Import complete with counts appears only then.

Close and Cancel are blocked while import is running. Do not leave or refresh the page until import finishes. Comment search indexing may continue after the import finishes.

What happens next

When import succeeds, the screen shows Import complete. It lists each created template (one or two) with counts of:

  • categories
  • questions
  • comments
  • notes

Click Done. Done selects Residential if one was created, otherwise Commercial. The new template or templates are available in your library. Comments stay on the created template and appear in the Comments library, scoped to the matching Rec subcategory. Title is component — condition (or the condition alone for General / General notes / Private notes).

If a file is missing, too large, or not JSON, import does not start and you are asked to select both a Horizon base library (horizon.json) and a company export.
